Office Depot now offering ViewSonic G tablet; $399
Nov 30th
->
Office Depot has expanded its tablet offerings with the Android 2.2-based and budget-friendly ViewSonic G.
The 10-inch slate computer sports a multi-touch LCD, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, 16GB of storage space memory and microSD card slot for more. Even though I don’t agree with Office Depot dubbing this tablet as the “number one item for the gadget guru” in your life this holiday season, it’s not a bad deal either.
The ViewSonic G tablet is available at Office Depot retail stores and online for $399. (Although at publishing time, the product page hasn’t been posted to Office Depot’s website just yet.)
Acer debuts Android-based smartphone with 4.8-inch display
Nov 23rd
->
Acer has also introduced an Android-based smartphone with a 4.8-inch display, which the maker dubs as “100% smartphone, 100% tablet.”
While this one is going to fall more in the smartphone category, that LED-backlit screen is nothing to joke about. There are a lot of smartphones (i.e. HTC Droid Incredible, iPhone 4, etc.) advertised as being good for streaming movies when on-the-go. But with a 21:9 aspect ratio and 1,024 x 480 resolution, this one is surely to be the best option if that’s what you’re interested in.
Powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, this unnamed Acer sports a number of other impressive features, including:
- Multi-touch display
- HSDPA
- Wi-Fi
- Bluetooth 3.0
- DLNA support
- Dolby Mobile sound technology
- Adobe Flash Player 10.1 support
- 6-axis motion-sensing Gyroscope and accelerometer
- 8-megapixel rear camera and LED flash
- 2-megapixel front camera for high-quality IP video calling
- Google Apps suite (i.e Contacts, Google Maps, Email, Gchat, etc.)
- HDMI
However, the version of Android OS hasn’t been specified (presumably Froyo?) nor has the price. But it will be available in April 2011, so stay tuned.

Apple rumored to have sourced dual cameras for 2nd-gen iPad
Oct 29th
A new research note from research firm Detweiler Fenton (via Barron’s) claims that OmniVision Technologies (NASDAQ: OVTI)Â has won the contract to supply image sensors for both a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera and front-facing VGA camera for the second-generation iPad. The report goes on to say that the next-gen iPad will debut in the first quarter of 2011, but relatively late in the quarter.
The research firm contends the new iPad will ship with two cameras, a 5 MP camera and a VGA camera, and likely will support Apple’s FaceTime video chat software. Detweiler says their early read is that Apple will build 2.5 million units of the next iPad in calendar Q1, providing an incremental 5 million units of demand from Apple for OVTI, which also supplies sensors for the iPhone.
We knew that this was coming eventually, and now that a supplier has be identified dual cameras seem to be a sure thing for inclusion on iPad 2.0. What I found most interesting was that the timeline has been extended to “late” Q3, which means that we most likely won’t see it in January as had been rumored by some.
